Habib grammar questions, the ones that actually come up

Grammar on the Habib test is not a rulebook exam. The Writing section wraps grammar inside a paragraph-editing task, so 'knowing the rules' isn't enough, you have to spot when the rule matters. Below is what actually gets tested and where confident writers still lose marks.

Grammar topics that come up in every mock

  • Subject-verb agreement, especially with intervening phrases.
  • Pronoun-antecedent agreement and pronoun clarity.
  • Modifier placement and dangling modifiers.
  • Comma splices, run-ons, and correct clause joining.
  • Parallel structure in lists and comparisons.
  • Apostrophes and possessives, singular vs plural.

Traps that catch strong writers

The commonest trap is 'more is better', the shortest grammatical option is usually the correct one. Another: assuming a sentence is right because it reads fine aloud; the test rewards edits that improve flow, not edits that avoid it.

How to drill grammar without wasting time

Practise inside paragraphs, not on isolated sentences. Every grammar question on the test sits inside a passage, and the correct answer often depends on the sentences either side. Print grammar drills only get you halfway. For the current test format, check Habib's official page.
