Vocabulary

Habib vocabulary, in context, not in lists

Vocabulary on the Habib test isn't a GRE-style word list. Reading questions test vocabulary in context, the same word means different things depending on the sentence, and the test rewards applicants who can read the sentence before the definition. Cramming 3000 words won't help. Practising context will.

How vocabulary is actually tested

Reading questions like 'in line X, the word Y most nearly means…' don't reward memorised definitions. They reward re-reading the sentence, spotting the shade of meaning the author intended, and picking the answer choice that matches that shade, not the dictionary default.

Where to focus if you have two weeks

  • Read passages of unfamiliar prose daily and note any word you'd translate loosely.
  • For each word, write your own one-line sentence using it correctly.
  • Learn word families (root + prefix + suffix) not isolated words.
  • Skip 'GRE flashcard' apps unless you already know 80% of the words on them.

What to do on test day

Always re-read the sentence in context before committing to a vocabulary answer. Even a word you know can carry a shade you missed on the first read. Confirm the current Reading section format on Habib's admissions site before you finalise your prep plan.
