Habib English MCQs, the shapes that come up

The Habib entry test's English component is almost entirely multiple-choice, and every question type has a small number of shapes it can take. Learn the shapes and half your answer is chosen before you read the options. Below are the shapes you'll see the most and how to handle each.

Reading MCQs, question stems that repeat

  • "The primary purpose of the passage is…" go to the last paragraph first.
  • "The author most likely believes that…" attitude, not fact.
  • "In line X, the word Y most nearly means…" always re-read in context.
  • "Which choice best supports the answer to the previous question?" the two are a pair.

Writing MCQs, edit types that repeat

  • Grammar and punctuation edits.
  • Word-choice and register edits.
  • Sentence-combination edits.
  • Add / delete / reorder sentence edits, look at the paragraph, not the sentence.

How to review a batch of English MCQs

For every wrong answer, name which shape the question was, then name which distractor trap you fell into. Reviewing without naming both leaves you with 'I got it wrong', not with knowledge that transfers. Habib's admissions page has the current test format if you want to double-check before you build a schedule.
