Question styles: main idea, author's purpose, tone, inference, vocabulary in context, and evidence-based reasoning. Vocabulary-in-context questions look easy and are where most applicants lose an easy point.

• Literary passages, often 19th-century prose narrative.
• Historical and social science passages, argumentative in style.
• Natural science passages, explanatory with technical claims.
• Paired passages, comparing two short texts on the same topic.

• Standard English conventions: punctuation, subject-verb agreement, pronoun clarity, modifier placement.
• Sentence structure: coordination, subordination, parallelism.
• Word choice: precision, register, redundancy.
• Rhetorical revision: adding, cutting, or reordering sentences for clarity and flow.

One timed, proctored essay. Prompt is a short passage or claim. The rubric grades three things separately: Reading (did you engage the prompt?), Analysis (is your argument coherent?), and Writing (control over sentences, transitions, and structure).
