Habib essay writing practice

The essay is the most recoverable component of the Habib application. It's also the one applicants leave until last. A week of real, timed essay practice, three prompts, one review each, moves the essay score more than a month of reading essay guides.

How the practice should be structured

Set a timer. Pick a prompt. Write for the same duration the real essay allows. Submit and read the feedback carefully, not just the score, but the notes on reading comprehension, analysis, and writing. Then pick a different prompt and go again in three days.

Prompt types you'll see

  • Argumentative, take a position on a debatable question.
  • Reflective, respond to a quote or short passage.
  • Comparative, weigh two ideas against each other.

What to focus on in review

Look at whether your thesis is specific and arguable. Look at whether each paragraph makes an argument or just describes. Look at your conclusion, did it earn the space, or was it filler? Those three questions cover 80% of the marks the rubric gives out.
