The two question forms that come up most

Pure symbolic manipulation ('solve for x') and translated word problems ('a plumber charges…'). Both need the same underlying algebra, but the translation step is where marks are actually lost. Practise word problems specifically, not just symbolic sets.

Where students lose marks

Sign errors, distribution mistakes, and misreading exponents. All of them are avoidable. Write out one line per algebraic step for the first two weeks of practice, the muscle memory carries over even when you stop showing your work.
